One of the main perks of online gambling, which Canadians of Nova Scotia and the eastern Atlantic region can most definitely appreciate, is that it does not require you leave the comfort and warmth of your home to place a bet. This is an advantage Canadians are so much closer to enjoy, so it seems. Another advantage the a legal and regulated online gambling market in Canada will bring is visitors from the south of the border - people who live a driving distance away and who will cross the border to place their bets until the day online gambling is legalized again in the US.Based on the latest move by the Atlantic Lottery Corp. of Nova Scotia, Canada may be preparing to legalize its market. What's NewThe Atlantic Lottery Corp. is seeking to hire a software developer to build a sports betting platform for the company to serve the Atlantic region. On its website, the Atlantic Lottery Corp. posted the following announcement: "In order to remain relevant to our players we must deliver what the player wants in the safest and most entertaining way possible." Canada may see 6-8% of an estimated $50 billion over the next 10 years, according to estimates and a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers report on Internet sports betting in the US. CommentsCourtney Pringle, from the lottery's New Brunswick offices only commented saying the tendering process is confidential: "At this point in time, there are no details I can discuss." The bidding closes May 6. On the opposition one can find Nova Scotia Legislature member Michel Samson who was quick to question whether controls would be in place to protect minors, though such concerns have been raised - and dealt with - in the past across the Internet.
Canada is unveiling a new lottery - one that Canadians have been asking for. Lotto Max will launch in September and is the newest game from the Canadian National Lottery. For the first time ever, there will be additional $1 million prize once the jackpot reaches $50 million, giving players an extra incentive to play. Tickets will go on sale September 19, 2009 and the first draw will be held on September 25, 2009 with draws being held every Friday night until a winner has been found. Jim Lightbody, the BCLC Vice President of Lottery Gaming and Interprovincial Lottery Corporation President, says that "Lotto Max will give Canadians what they've been asking for. Unique to Canada, the Maxmillion prizes will revolutionize the lottery as Canadians currently know it." Details... details... Once the jackpot hits $50 million, any additional money added will be allocated into a series of Maxmillions prizes worth $1 million. Each $1 million will have its own individual draw and set of winning numbers. Players will receive three chances to win, with seven numbers each set per $5 play. The base jackpot will be $10 million and will grow until won or reaches the $50 million mark, in which the Maxmillions play takes over. In order to win the jackpot, players must match 7 out of 7 of their numbers from one to forty-nine. Odds of winning any prize are one in 6.6 per play and winning the jackpot is one in 28.6 million per play.
British Columbia residents will soon get the chance to bet thousands of dollars each week on sports, online games and the lottery following a decision to expand a provincial gambling Website. The British Columbia Lottery Corp. announced on Thursday its decision to raise the weekly limit on its gambling Website from C$120 (US$111) to nearly C$10,000 (US$92,500) by the year 2014.The Website sells lottery tickets and allows bets on sports and on games such as bingo and poker.British Columbia Lottery Corp. president Michael Graydon said research showed that players should be permitted to set their own limits. "We felt that it was important to put a ceiling on that, but really the premise and the outcome of the research was we're in the best shape to be able to let the players set their own limits," he said. "It gives them the opportunity, based on their own economics, to be able to set what they'd like to do."Blackjack, roulette, poker and other games will be available from March 2010 on the corporation's PlayNow Website. The move has been met with criticism from opposition politicians, with Shane Simpson of the New Democrat Party calling the decision "unacceptable.""This has been done with no consultation, as I can see, with people who are concerned about problem gambling," he said. But Graydon has defended the move, pointing out that it could now tap into the approximately C$87 million British Columbians spend on foreign gambling Websites, "rather than it all going offshore to places like Antigua."

Following a move to Kahnawake servers, Bodog is now operating offshore and has started to accept Canadian players on its popular online casino, which offers poker, slots and a selection of table games. With the home market still shying away from regulation, the Canadian authorities will no doubt be looking into this development. Canadian Entrepreneur Goes Back to his RootsBodog owner, Calvin Ayre, originally a Vancouver resident, is a renowned entrepreneur, having turned his online casino into a billion dollar global entertainment empire. Spotlight on Outdated LawsHis decision to open up shop in Canada shows public contempt to the current gambling laws and is raising a few eyebrows. With no regulation in Canada, some are noting that legislation is not keeping pace with reality. The current legislative void means that there are no legal safeguards in place for Canadian punters and, in addition, the government is also missing out on millions of dollars of potential tax revenue. With an eye on US discussions on regulation, the Canadian authorities will surely be lamenting such a big casino contravening state law.
Did you know that there is a national Problem Gambling Prevention Week held annually in Ontario? Called "Within Limits" and sponsored by the Responsible Gaming Council (RGC), it is a joint effort between local organizations across the region. Providing a full calendar of interactive displays, activities, and advertising, it reaches over 3 million households a year! Starting off with a bi-lingual (French and English) website, the RGC has an interactive, flash based game to help people recognize the triggers and symptoms of problem gamblers. It is aimed towards all age levels with graphics and point and click features. There is a "community events" calendar that lists exact places, times and dates of the events making it very easily accessible for any person to join in. Also included online is a treatment center locator, usable by entering in your postal code. In addition, visitors are able to read personal testimonials from people all over Canada and how they received help and why. Finally, there are download-able brochures in 17 different languages, ranging from Chinese, Farsi, Polish, Russian and Tagalog - meaning everyone can have access and there are no excuses about language barriers. As in most parts of the world these days, online gambling in Canada is a growing industry. However, whether online gambling in Canada is legal is actually still a bit of a grey zone. Luckily for Canadian players, however, online gambling licences are available in Kahnawake. The Kahnawake regard themselves as a separate, sovereign nation to Canada and so its laws are not applicable to them. This means that the debate about whether online gambling in Canada is legal or not, doesn't apply to them. Kahnawake is an Indian reserve in Quebec and has its own Kahnawake Gaming Commission. In 1999, the Commission passed regulations to ensure that only suitable entities were allowed to operate, that games are fair to players and that winners are paid ... which can only be good news to the ears of Canadian players! The Mohawk Internet Technologies (MIT) hosts and manages all sites and is regarded as the closest and fastest source of 'legally hosted' gambling websites for players from the US and Canada. The Kahnawake Mohawk Nation has actually operated its own online casino since 1999 and generates an impressive annual profit of $2 million. How does Canada deal with online casinos?Unsurprisingly, governments around the globe have adopted different approaches to online gaming. For example, the United Kingdom decided to regulate and tax online casinos whereas the United States headed the exact opposite direction and totally prohibited online gambling in an attempt to wipe it out altogether. Canada, however, has chosen until now at least, not to pass any regulatory legislation. This lack of online gaming regulation in Canada means that not only that the government is missing the boat on millions of dollars of revenue in tax but that protection for Canadian gamblers questionable. So for now it's probably a safer bet to stick to online casinos hosted by the MIT.
A new study on the differences between Canadians and Americans in the 19-34 year-old age group has found that Canadians are less likely to gamble online than their neighbors to the south. The study, conducted by Canadian research group Ipsos Reid, found that 20 percent - or one in every five young Canadians - played games online for money, slightly less than the 28 percent of Americans who said they gamble online. A more detailed look at the figures reveals that while Canadians prefer playing the lottery to their American counterparts, less Canadians actually play online. Eighty percent of Canadian respondents said they play the lottery, but only 31 percent said they might do so online. In contrast, only 63 percent of young Americans play the lottery, but 46 percent of them said they would be interested in playing the lottery online. Gambling LegalityCanadians and Americans were also found to have different perceptions of the legality of gambling, most likely because of the less restrictive laws north of the border. Only 19 percent of Canadian respondents to the survey said they perceived gambling as illegal, significantly lower than in the United States, where 31 percent of respondents said they felt that way. The American respondents were undoubtedly influenced by the legal battle over the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which effectively banned online gambling in the United States.
Alain Cousineau, President and CEO of the Canadian lottery provider, Lotto-Quebec, confessed in a speech this week that the corporation must respond to the huge growth in the online gambling industry and reinvent itself to remain competitive. The remarks were addressed to the Montreal Board of Trade and come as Lotto-Quebec prepares to celebrate its fortieth anniversary. Cousineau revealed that the organization will expand its business operations and venture into online gambling. The company plans to incorporate a virtual betting outlet, mainly composed of online poker rooms and sportsbooks, possibly as early as mid-2010. Lotto-Quebec is apparently intending to collaborate with five other lottery corporations from various Canadian provinces, such as British Columbia and four Atlantic provinces, which already provide online gaming services. However, a number of regulatory changes must first occur to allow such a move and Lotto-Quebec has submitted its request.
