Overview

Roulette counts itself among the most iconic of all casino games. The famed spinning wheel has long been associated with glitz, glamour and even royalty. Given this perceived standing, it is no wonder that Roulette is often called the "king" of casino games.
Roulette is primarily a game of chance. While specific strategies may play a role from time to time, players are ultimately at the mercy of the bouncing white ball. This fact is what makes Roulette so thrilling. Fortunes have been made (and lost) with a single-wheel spin. There are plenty of bet types available, ranging from conservative to aggressive.

Initially reserved for elite casinos such as those in Monte Carlo and Las Vegas, the roulette table can now be seen in casinos worldwide. As a result, it is not uncommon to find different game variations under one roof.
Roulette has also made its way onto the floors of online casinos all over. Players no longer need to head off to a casino to experience the thrill of the spinning wheel. Most online casinos have included a good catalogue of roulette variants to suit their players' tastes, with French Roulette, American Roulette and European Roulette proving to be among the most popular. Online players can also indulge in various live dealer roulette games, allowing them to enjoy the best of the online and live environments.

The online casino environment offers plenty of benefits that land-based casinos cannot replicate. Some of these benefits include the availability of welcome bonuses and playing free roulette games. Additionally, with the need for gambling on the go, online roulette games can be played on PC, laptops and even mobile devices, making them more accessible than ever.

This page strives to give you an in-depth look into the world of online roulette games. We will tell you what the game's rules are, explain what different game variations look like and even explain many of the popular terms associated with this intriguing casino game. We also provide you with some helpful tips and strategies to minimise your losses and hopefully place you in the winning circle. Finally, you can also find links to some quality online roulette casino sites.

Limited strategy options

History

The history of Roulette is fascinating. The game is derived from Rome, where contestants would shoot arrows in a wheel that had holes in it. However, it is believed that the Chinese used this activity as a means of torturing.

In casinos, Roulette is one of the oldest, but it was not until the 17th century that the game started to take its shape. An illustrious mathematician called Blaise Pascal invented the game and its rules that remain the same even today. He even made the small wheel used to play the game, and that's how the game got its name Roulette, as in French, roulette means wheel.

Later on, to provide an added advantage to the house, Lois and Francois Blanc invented and designed the single zero roulette wheel.

The first game was known as European Roulette, and its introduction took the entire European continent by storm. King Charles became a big admirer because the game became the prime source of earnings for his kingdom. When it crossed borders and landed in the United States, the game took off.

The game became known as American Roulette, and it became the prime source of entertainment for the wealthy barons of the land. American casinos made an additional change to the game in America; an extra zero, i.e. "00", was added. The extra zeroes extended the degree of advantage afforded earlier to the house.

Many versions of the game, including French Roulette, European Roulette, 3D Roulette, American Roulette, and others, are played across the globe, all due to the availability of online gambling sites.

Popular Terms

Casino games tend to give evidence of the history attached to them. The same is the case with Roulette, which reflects its American & French background.

American Wheel: The wheel contains all thirty-eight digits. In American Roulette, there is an addition of 00 to give an added advantage to the house.

Ball: The little white-coloured ball that is used to play the game. It rotates along with the wheel until finally settling down on a digit.

Column Bet: A bet was taken on the vertical line of twelve digits (1-12, 13-24, 25-36) with a payout ratio equal to 2:1. The bet is also called a "derniere", or a dozen bets for the last 12 digits. If the bet is placed on the first 12 digits, it is known as "premiere 12".

Corner Bet: A bet taken on the 04 neighbouring digits has a good payout of 8:1. In French, it is called "carr".

Croupier: French term for "dealer", also used in online casinos and American Casinos.

European Wheel: Wheel with 36 numbers, one zero less than the American version.

Even Bet: A bet taken on every even digit.

Even Money Bet: All bets that have payouts in the ratio of 1:1. These include odd/even, red/black, and high/low.

Five Number Bet: The bet is valid only in American Roulette and is taken on 1, 2, 3, 0, and 00.

High / Low Bet: Bit placed on either the high digits from 19 to 36 or on low digits 1 to 18.

Inside Bet: Bet is placed on the digits present on the inside part of the game table.

Line Bet: Bet placed on six continuous digits.

Odd Bet: Bet placed on all odd numbers apart from zero.

Outside Bet: A bet placed on outcome besides the numbers such as high or low or red or black.

Split Bet: A bet placed on two numbers.

Straight Up Bet: A bet placed on 1 number.

Street Bet: A bet placed on three serial numbers.

Rules

Objective: To guess which area (or spot) the ball will finally land.

Rival: The House.

System:

  1. Bets are taken on a set of digits (corner, lines, and columns), single numbers, odd or even, red or black, high or low. Each player takes a wager on them.
  2. The dealer spins the wheel; all players and observers then wait for the ball to land in the slot.
  3. The dealer pays the winners.

House advantage: In the European version of the game, the figure stands at 2.7%. In the American version, however, due to the addition of two zeroes, the figure rises to 5.26%.

Payout Ratio:

Straight-up bet on one number - 36:1 (or 37:1/38:1 in the absence of house advantage).

Split bet on two numbers - 17:1.

Street bet on three numbers - 11:1.

Corner bet on four numbers - 8:1.

6-number bet - 5:1.

Column or outside 12 number bet - 2:1.

Even Money Bets - 1:1.

Strategy

You cannot devise a winning formula for Roulette because there is no pattern to the game. It's all dependent on the roll of the wheel; every spin is independent, so you don't know what you will get next. This rule applies to all versions of the game. However, there are a few tactics that one can follow to enhance the probability of winning.

Martingale Strategy: People new to the game like to use this tactic. It is pretty simple. A player decides to wager only on even money bets (odds/evens, high/low, red/black) and in case of a loss, the amount of the bet is doubled. In Even Money Bets, there is a 50% chance of winning, so by when the bet is increased two times after each loss. It ensures that all the losses will be recovered when the player wins. The primary risk in this bet is that if the option does not roll for 4-5 continuous attempts, the bankroll limit might get exhausted, and players can lose all the money.

D'Alembert Strategy: This is a conservative approach to the game in which the player decreases the wager for each win and increases the stake for each loss. The goal here is to stop after netting off your losses. If you go on a losing streak, hold back, and if it's the other way round, then cash in your chips.

James Bond Strategy: The strategy is named after Bond, so it's safe to assume that it is sure to be flashy. It requires a minimum of C$200 and is only applicable for the European version of the game. The tactic is to make a wager on column bet; 10% of the amount is placed on zero, 25% on low digits and 70% on high digits; This gives you a 50% chance of winning if the ball hits 0 or a high number, hit low, and you're out.

Tips

Roulette is a simple yet fun and exciting game, especially if you are new to the world of casinos, here are some quick roulette tips to get you started:

Getting Started

Playing online Roulette is an easy process. All you need is your desktop computer or laptop and some internet connectivity. Once you have logged on, follow our five-step process to get things started:

1 Do some homework

To fully enjoy your time at the online roulette wheel, you need to know the basics. It is always a good idea to read through the rules, understand the terms used and get to know the names of the various bets. This information will help you to make good decisions at the table.

2 Choose a casino

Now that you've studied the roulette rules, it is time to choose an online casino. This choice will largely depend on your preferences, but we would advise you to look for one that offers a good array of roulette games and large bonuses. Also, please make sure that the casino you choose is properly licensed and regulated.

3 Get in the Game

You've found your perfect casino. It is now time to get to a table. Find a version of online Roulette that suits your tastes and join in the fun. Because you are playing online, there is little to no waiting time to play at a table (unless you've opted for a live dealer variant). If you're not sure which version you prefer at this point, go and try out some free online roulette games to get a better sense of what you may enjoy.

4 Make a Wager

The only way to immerse yourself in the game is by making a bet. Remember to start small so that you get to dip your toe in the roulette waters before diving in. Several online casinos will offer low stakes tables, so keep an eye out for these.

5 Know your Pay Tables

With online Roulette, each bet type pays out at different odds. You must know these payout tables, as they will affect the money you stand to win.

Terminology

Making sense of all the jargon used when playing online Roulette can sometimes be confusing. Thankfully, we're here to help. We've compiled a list of the most commonly used terms to help you at the roulette table. We'll have you speaking the lingo like a pro in no time!

Roulette Glossary

Roulette Game Types

The basic tenets of Roulette remain the same: select your bet type, wait for the wheel to start spinning and hold thumbs that the little white ball lands in your favour. You are unlikely to find an extensive collection of online roulette variants. Below are some of the most common options:

Bingo Roulette

Bingo roulette is a mash-up of two classic casino games. Players will spin a roulette that features all the outstanding bingo numbers on a card. The aim is to be the first to fill all five numbers in a particular row or strip. Should you achieve this, you will win the Full House prize.

Live Bingo Roulette

Live bingo roulette is the same as the standard bingo roulette version. However, this variant is played in real-time against a live caller. Players can enjoy this innovative casino game in a live setting.

Mini Roulette

Mini Roulette is played in the same way as the standard version. However, the wheel is smaller, only featuring numbers 1 to 12 and a single '0'. In addition, this variant contains an additional rule that sees half of a player's bet returned if he lands on the '0'.

Multi-wheel Roulette

The rules don't change with multi-wheel Roulette, only the number of roulette wheels! With this variant, players can bet on the outcome of eight separate roulette wheels at once. In addition, players can select which wheels will be active during a particular spin.

Roulette Royale

Roulette Royale plays out in the same way as other roulette wheels. The game utilises a European wheel (single '0' segment). However, unlike the standard European roulette wheel, Roulette Royale features a progressive jackpot. Players can also choose between a regular version of the game and Expert Mode.

French Roulette

A French Roulette table is like the European variant in that it only contains a single '0'. However, French Roulette includes two additional rules –the En Prison rule and the Le Partage rule in addition to the standard rules. The former states that a losing even-money bet remains on the table, essentially being 'imprisoned' until the next spin. If a player scores a win with that spin, the stake is given back to the player. The latter rule stipulates that any losing even-money bet, where the original spin lands on a zero, is split 50/50 between the house and the player.

American Roulette

Often regarded as the 'standard' version (although Europeans will disagree!), the American Roulette comprises 38 segments. The segments are numbered from 1 to 36, and the wheel also contains a single'0' segment and a double '00' segment. This deviation differentiates it from European Roulette and gives the house a more significant edge.

Live Roulette

Live Roulette (or live dealer roulette) reflects the game's standard version. However, players get to play against a real-life dealer in real-time. This variant aims to provide players with a real casino experience, complete with all the sights, sounds, and interactions that one would expect in the live environment.

European Roulette

European Roulette is the most popular variant of the game. So it should be no surprise that European Roulette also offers the best odds for players; This is because the wheel has 37 segments – a single '0' segment, with the rest marked from 1 to 36.

Lightning Roulette

Lightning Roulette offers a French Roulette table with a host of exciting twists. In addition to the usual inside, outside and neighbour bets, the game will randomly select a set of Lucky Numbers and a multiplier amount of Lucky Pay-outs. As the name suggests, each game is played at lightning speed.

FAQ

The reality is that online Roulette is a game of chance so that You can chalk up any wins to good luck. There are one or two strategies that players may use, but this only serves to minimise losses. In short, you win if that little white ball bounces your way.

All that a player needs to play online Roulette is a decent PC or a laptop and an internet connection. But, of course, if they are looking to place a bet, they will also require credit card details.

The answer to this question depends on the online casino site you choose to join. Most casinos will need you to download their specific software to access the range of games. There are, however, several no-download casinos where users can play from the site without the need to download anything first.

Yes, you can! Online roulette tables are designed to replicate actual roulette tables in the live environment. The gameplay is the same, and so are the payouts (provided you're playing at real money online roulette sites!).

As long as you play at a licensed casino, the answer is no. Licensed casinos must adhere to strict regulations to maintain those licenses. This fact includes ensuring that all casino games are fair and transparent. These games will usually also be subjected to testing by an independent authority. There is very little space and incentive for any reputable online casino to rig the online roulette tables.

Many online casinos will include a free or demo online roulette game. This provision lets players try the game out in a risk-free environment before committing any real money to a real money roulette table. Of course, you do not receive any winnings, but the practice spins can prove invaluable.

The only notable difference is the numbers on the roulette wheel. American games have one more spot as they contain two green zero slots, not only one as found on European tables.

It's always difficult to state that one site is better than another, as this boils down to players' preferences. However, we can say that a quality online roulette site will offer a great selection of high-end roulette games, complemented by generous bonuses and top-notch payouts.

The minimum bet amount at a roulette table ultimately depends on the online casino. However, it is essential to remember that online roulette tables generally have a lower stake amount than those in the live environment.
